Nurse Practitioner
I am a Nurse Practitioner and a proud member of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory team, caring for patients undergoing angioplasty.
I started out as a Respiratory Therapist at Southside Hospital. I obtained my nursing degree and worked for five years as an RN before going back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP). North Shore-LIJ NPs go through a six-week orientation program, which includes studying at the Center for Learning and Innovation and working on site – first with a preceptor, and then directly with patients. I found this to be excellent on-the-job training.
Working with the medical simulators in the Patient Safety Institute was also an important part of my orientation. I participated in multiple scenarios, playing the role of an NP, as well as viewing and taking part in the debriefing of my fellow NPs. As part of our training, we encountered some very difficult situations. But facing complex scenarios has better equipped our team to handle any real life challenges that may arise in a healthcare setting.
In addition to job training, North Shore-LIJ has fulfilled my passion for learning. There are a number of opportunities available here to take advantage of, to help each of us grow and become experts in our field. The benefits are endless, and I look forward to exploring all that North Shore-LIJ has to offer.
At North Shore-LIJ, we understand that caring for our patients begins with caring for our people. Therefore, we work hard to keep our nurses happy and fulfilled, providing them with the opportunity to make a difference in treatment, in outcomes, and in quality improvement. Achieving this means creating an environment in which learning never stops, and ensuring the support, resources and tools that foster growth are always available. This includes education, mentoring, coaching or preceptor programs, collaboration and encouragement.
Grow Your Career with Us
Our unique Institute for Nursing enables staff nurses, nursing educators, nursing researchers and nursing practice leaders to enhance their knowledge and expertise in a professional practice environment. In this collaborative setting, nurses on all levels have a voice in making decisions that improve patient care and create a healthier, more supportive workplace. Here, you will have the opportunity to conduct research, extract best practice and articulate your expertise through publications and presentations, both within and outside the health system.
Additional educational opportunities are available through our corporate university, the Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI). There, we offer over sixty diverse courses designed to develop your nursing, management, business and personal skills. Within CLI is our Patient Safety Institute that features a state-of-the-art virtual reality human simulation lab, enabling you to diagnose and manage clinical problems without risk to real patients.
We offer a robust nursing extern program for student nurses; fellowship programs that allow nurses to efficiently and effectively transition into Critical Care or ED units; and partnerships with local colleges for on-site education and various nursing degree programs – including our Doctorate of Nursing Practice.
By offering courses and resources that are relevant and exciting, we’re not only expanding the learning capacity of our organization, but we are building leaders who will advance our system’s strategic goals and objectives.
