North Shore-LIJ is always proud to honor team members for a job well done. We have created several significant programs to reward and recognize employee excellence, including:
Annual Service Anniversary Rewards Program
North Shore-LIJ regularly hosts system-wide Service Award dinners to honor team members who have completed 20+ years of consecutive service. These dinners are held at an upscale banquet hall, where employees celebrate their milestones amongst hundreds of colleagues and family members. In addition, for every additional fifth anniversary leading up to 50 years, employees receive the opportunity to choose from a selection of beautiful gifts from Michael C. Fina. Gifts range from a selection of household items, to jewelry, to home decor pieces. Honored employees also receive a personal letter from our President and CEO, thanking them for their service and dedication.
The President’s Award
The President’s Award celebrates the highest standards of employee excellence, and rewards team members with generous, tangible awards. The program seeks to recognize team members who deliver exceptional work across three categories: Exceptional Patient Experience, Innovation and Teamwork. The winner of our Exceptional Patient Experience Award receives a crystal award, a cash bonus, and a one-week vacation anywhere in the world. He or she is also publicly recognized during the annual Board of Trustees meeting, and at a special awards dinner gala at a beautiful hotel.
Innovation and Teamwork winners receive a crystal award, and a cash bonus to be split equally among all team members. They also receive vouchers for a dinner for two, and two tickets to a Broadway Show. All finalists are invited to attend the awards dinner gala in recognition of their achievement.
Please note: The President’s Award program would not be possible without the sponsorship from our generous donors, who believe rewarding employees for outstanding service is at the heart of accomplishing our mission.
Everyday Hero Awards
In 2010, North Shore-LIJ started a new program to recognize employees who go above and beyond not only at work, but outside of the workplace as well. Ten employees were selected to receive a crystal award with “Making a World of Difference” theme inscribed. Each was publicly recognized for their good deeds outside of the workplace at the Board of Trustees meeting and was profiled in the corporate employee newsletter, The New Standard.
Professional Recognition Weeks
In an industry as large and diverse as healthcare, many professions have designated “weeks of celebration” throughout the year. Some of these celebrations can last up to one month. Each focuses on contributions of individual professional groups such as Nursing, Social Work and Physical Therapy Weeks. North Shore-LIJ participates in many of these celebrations, encouraging and/or providing site-sponsored team member group planning for the celebration, displays, gifts for all employees in the celebrating profession, raffle prizes, food, educational activities, and contribution acknowledgements.
Annual Employee Picnic and Softball Tournament for Family and Friends
This event attracts more than 4,000 team members and their families, who come together for an action-packed day of fun, food, family and friends. In addition to a wide range of fun activities for all ages, and a large family-style BBQ, the highlight of the day is our annual championship softball game, in which dozens of teams compete for the coveted North Shore-LIJ Championship cup.
Similar sports-related activities throughout the year include our:
- Basketball League
- Co-Ed Volleyball
- Bowling League
- Tennis Teams
- Touch Football
- Softball Teams (men’s and women’s)
- Runners/Walkers Club
Annual Team Member Appreciation BBQ
Each hospital and office building holds a summer “appreciation” BBQ, where every team member is invited to enjoy a great meal, fun and festivities at their workplace. Team members are recognized for their efforts and service during these informal events, and often receive a nice token of appreciation.
