Description:
The Director of Microbiology administers the technical and scientific operation of a clinical microbiology laboratory, including development and evaluation of test procedures, reporting results, adherence to the department's quality control standards and accurate reporting of findings of tests.
1. Responsible for the overall operations of the clinical microbiology laboratory.
2. Serves as primary liaison between laboratory and clinical care providers (physicians and other medical personnel), hospital administration and management.
3. Provides advice to referring/prescribing physicians regarding the significance of laboratory findings and the interpretation of laboratory data.
4. Maintains an effective working relationship with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, administrative officials, and the medical community.
5. Oversees and evaluates quality management and performance improvement programs across assigned clinical disciplines and ensures related policies and procedures are maintained, communicated and implemented.
6. Oversees research and development of new test procedures and methodologies.
7. Monitors, reviews and assesses work performed in the laboratory to ensure quality and medically reliable data and/or services are generated.
8. Assures laboratory participation in monitoring and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of services rendered, within the context of the quality assurance program.
9. Ensures sufficient qualified personnel are employed and scheduled with documented training and/or experience to supervise and perform the work of the laboratory.
10. Ensures compliance with all regulatory standards including but not limited to: NYSDOH, CAP, OSHA, FDA, JCAHO, EPA, governing the Clinical Lab.
11. Performs teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate medical education, teaching of medical staff and physicians-in-training of clinical services, and teaching of allied health staff, including laboratory personnel.
12. Participates in clinical and basic research projects, and advises fellows and house staff.
13. As member of Division of Infectious Disease Diagnostics, participates in call coverage as appropriate; participates in divisional activities including research projects and clinical initiatives; and contributes to administrative oversight as appropriate.
14. Participates in departmental and hospital committees and task groups, as required.
15. Performs related duties, as required.

Qualifications:
- PhD in Microbiology field, required.
- Professional license and appropriate New York State Department of Health Certificate of Qualification in area of subspecialty, required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years progressively responsible related experience in Microbiology, required.
- Advanced interpersonal skills, required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, required.
