North Shore University Hospital is the cornerstone of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. Our 788 bed tertiary care facility is also an academic campus for New York University School of Medicine. Long dedicated to providing the best care possible, the hospital was ranked among the nation's Top 50 Hospitals for cardiac services and open heart surgery by U.S. News and World Report, and boasts numerous other distinctions. It is a demonstration site for the latest equipment and procedures including one of the New York area's first 64 slice CT scans. It also offers care in advanced medical specialties including maternal fetal medicine, bone marrow transplants, and houses the Don Monti Oncology Center. The hospital is a designated Level I Trauma Center and is recognized as a unique provider for HIV/AIDS patients. The Schwartz Ambulatory Center performs 10,000 procedures annually. The hospital continues to meet the needs of the underserved members of the community through a comprehensive network of 65 clinics.

The ideal candidate will conduct medical evaluations and provide care to adult and pediatric patients before and during transport by ambulance as well as performing all phases of transport services including maintenance of equipment..

Our Paramedic's mission is to respond to calls for out of hospital emergency medical services and provide appropriate and high quality medical care to victims of injury or illness, as authorized by regional standing delegated orders or through online medical control. This is a highly visible position in the community and, as such, Paramedics shall interact with patients, the public, members of other agencies and departments with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, and respect and always with the welfare of the patient and the public in mind.


Responsibilities include:
Responds to emergency calls received through call receiving centers, evaluates the nature and acuity of illness or injury, establishes patient care priorities, administers appropriate pre-hospital care, and provides the necessary transportation for patients to the appropriate medical facility. All of the aforementioned duties must be accomplished within the protocols and regulations set forth by the North Shore-LIJ Center for EMS and in compliance with regional treatment protocols and regulations set forth by the New York State Department of Health. Provides appropriate verbal communication and prepares thorough written documentation of the condition and treatment of the patient, at the scene and during transport, and any other information pertinent to hospital staff for diagnostic, recordkeeping, legal, or billing purposes. Maintains a safe environment for patients, emergency personnel, and the public through the use of sound judgment, personal protective equipment (i.e. gloves), and constant equipment checks. This includes ensuring sanitary conditions of equipment, vehicles, and other hospital property. Checks vehicles and equipment for compliance with NYS and regional regulations. At all times interacts with patients, the public, and members of other agencies or departments with a high degree of courtesy, professionalism, and respect. Maintains familiarity with emergency and prehospital medical care by constantly keeping up to date with the latest practices. Maintains knowledge of REMAC treatment protocols, local municipal requirements and policies and procedures of the North Shore-LIJ Center for EMS. Performs and participates actively in Continuing Medical Education, Clinical Continuous Quality Improvement, and other departmental programs, goals and objectives as directed by the supervisory staff or the Director. Operates hospital ambulances with due regard and in a safe manner, as indicated by NYS DMV, NYS DOH, and North Shore-LIJ Center for EMS Policies and Procedures. Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Adult Driver's License for a period of greater than three (3) years. Individual must possess a valid New York State Driver's License at the time of application, without violations.
  • New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certification. (Certification must be current at time of application.)
  • New York City Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) Certification. (Certification must be current at time of application.)
  • Working knowledge of electrocardiogram monitoring equipment, able to operate a computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to unique and challenging environmental conditions.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to make rapid and appropriate decisions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative care participant and provider.
