Emergency Medicine

North Shore-LIJ's Department of Emergency Medicine Services includes the Emergency Departments of three tertiary-care teaching hospitals: North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, LIJ Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital, as well as several community hospitals and urgent care centers throughout the New York metropolitan region.

We are always looking for talent to join our Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine teams. You will be working alongside some of the nation's best trained/certified physicians and clinicians at our emergency departments and urgent care centers in locations throughout some of New York's best communities, including Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan.

Emergency Department visits by location:

  • Cohen Children's Medical Center is a tertiary, teaching hospital committed to comprehensive care of pediatric patients. It is located on the Queens/Nassau County border. The hospital has 202 beds and sees over 60,000 patients annually in its Emergency Department.

  • Forest Hills Hospital is a 222-bed community hospital located in northern Queens with an annual Emergency Department patient volume of nearly 50,000.

  • Franklin Hospital is a 305-bed community hospital located in Nassau County with annual Emergency Department visits of over 42,000.

  • Glen Cove Hospital is a 265-bed hospital located in Nassau County providing excellent care to over 20,000 Emergency Department patients annually.

  • Huntington Hospital is a 408-bed hospital located in Suffolk County with nearly 50,000 emergency visits annually.

  • Lenox Hill Hospital, located in New York City, is a 652-bed facility seeing over 56,000 emergency patients annually.

  • Long Island Jewish Hospital, located in New Hyde Park, is a 473-bed tertiary care teaching hospital with an annual volume of over 82,000 Emergency Department visits.

  • North Shore University Hospital is an 812-bed tertiary academic medical center located in Nassau County treating over 87,000 emergency patients annually.

  • Plainview Hospital is a community hospital located in Nassau County. It has 239 inpatient beds and treats over 33,000 emergency patients annually.

  • Southside Hospital is a 341-bed tertiary hospital located in Suffolk County that treats over 70,000 emergency patients a year.

  • Staten Island University Hospital is a 714-bed, specialized teaching hospital occupying two large campuses, located on the north and south shores of Staten Island. The two Emergency Departments have an annual volume of over 126,000 visits.

  • Syosset Hospital is a community hospital in Nassau County with an annual Emergency Department patient volume of over 16,000.

North Shore-LIJ's Urgent Care Centers:

Urgent Care Center-Rego Park, located in Queens County, is a 10-exam-room facility open 7 days a week. The Center provides immediate medical care for injuries and minor emergencies and illness for patients of all ages. Other Urgent Care Centers are under development on Long Island and New York City, for which recruitment efforts are underway.

Fellowship Programs

We offer the following ACGME-Accredited Fellowship Opportunities:

  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Cohen Children's Hospital offers a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program focused on training physicians in emergency pediatric-clinical-care, teaching, administration, and research. This three-year program offers a comprehensive experience at one of the region's best pediatric care facilities.

  • Sports Medicine: The one-year Sports Medicine Program is ACGME-accredited. Fellows work with experts in the emergency department, office settings, and in the field at various local and national sporting events.

  • Toxicology: The two-year Toxicology Program is fully accredited, and is affiliated with the New York City Poison Control Center and the Long Island Regional Poison and Drug Information Center.

In addition, we offer the following non-accredited Fellowship Opportunities:

  • Critical Care: This two-year program provides fellows with expertise in Critical Care Medicine in both the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit settings. Fellowship training satisfies the requirements for eligibility for the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine.

  • Emergency Ultrasound: This program affords fellows a strong foundation in Emergency Ultrasound practice, research, and education, in preparation for leadership positions in the field of Emergency Ultrasound. In addition, upon completion of the program, fellows are prepared for RDMS certification.

  • FDNY EMS: This one-year fellowship is considered one of the world's premier programs in Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine. It is affiliated with the New York City Fire Department.

  • International Emergency Medicine: The one-year International Emergency Medicine Program offers fellows an opportunity to gain experience in emergency medicine and disaster preparedness in an international climate. The program is dedicated to improving emergency medical care and education in the global community.

  • Research: The Emergency Medicine Research Fellow works with investigators in the Emergency Department, as well as at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. It is possible to earn a PhD from the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine.
