World-Renowned Research
North Shore-LIJ is leading the charge on medical advances and breakthroughs at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, a world-renowned institution known as the health system's "best kept secret." The Institute is a growing force in research innovation, education and progress and continues to make history through its findings.
Through its deep connection to the health system, the Institute bridges the gap between biomedical research and patient care, accessing hundreds of thousands of patients in the health system's 15 hospitals, four long-term care facilities, three trauma centers, six home health agencies and dozens of outpatient facilities. Institute scientists collaborate with clinicians throughout the system to shed light on basic biological processes underlying disease. This knowledge is used to develop new therapies and diagnostics that put North Shore-LIJ at the forefront of ground-breaking research.
Currently, more than 2,000 scientists and investigators are conducting research in oncology, immunology and inflammation, genetics, psychiatry, neurology, pediatrics, surgery, urology, obstetrics/gynecology and many other specialties. Each year more than 1,300 active clinical research protocols occur that incorporate more than 11,000 registered human subjects. In 2010, the Feinstein received funding from the National Institutes of Health in excess of $40 million, placing the institute in the top 6% of all NIH-funded institutions worldwide.
The Feinstein received an additional $3 million from other federal sources and, together with other support, total annual research funding from all extramural sources was nearly $60 million in 2010.
