Joseph B.
Opthalmic Technical Manager
My name is Joseph Brendel. I am a proud veteran, having served two years in the New York State Army National Guard, 42nd Rainbow Division, 71st Infantry, HQ.,Co., and eight years in the New York State Air National Guard, 106th Rescue Wing, Medical Squadron. I am also a proud member of the North Shore-LIJ family.
I joined North Shore University Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology in November, 1987, as an Ophthalmic Technologist/Certified Ophthalmic Surgical Technician. While working full time in the Department of Ophthalmology, under the direction of now Chairman Emeritus Dr Samuel Packer, MD, the support I received was terrific. I was able continue with my Reserve obligation until I completed enough time to retire from the military. Thanks to North Shore University Hospital, and Dr. Samuel Packer, I held my position with the health system while I continued to serve my country. I never had a problem getting vacation when I needed to go away with the Reserves for two weeks every year. I was even able to go to Africa on a humanitarian mission.
In May 1999, I retired from the military and received the United States Meritorious Service Medal from the New York Air National Guard, 106th Rescue Wing, in West Hampton Beach, NY, and The State of New York Military Commendation Medal. My military training has allowed me to excel in my current role as an Opthalmic Technical Manager. Today, and as I look back, I am still very grateful to Dr. Packer and to North Shore-LIJ for making it possible for me to "aim high" and "be all I can be."
