North Shore-LIJ is committed to improving and enhancing the health and quality of life for the people and communities we serve. We do so not only by providing world-class service and patient-centered care, but also through our many community initiatives, special programs and services, and volunteerism. Our commitment to the community is reflected both in our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and also in the financial assistance programs we provide to care for people regardless of ability to pay.
In one year alone, we provided over $411 million in resources with programs that made a difference in the lives of more than 5.2 million community residents, and demonstrated our ongoing investment in the community. As a team member, you will be encouraged to give back by joining us in a wide variety of community initiatives, such as:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives
North Shore-LIJ recently partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), committing to a major ongoing initiative to protect public health and safeguard our planet’s resources. In the first year of the environmental sustainability program, North Shore-LIJ instituted a series of initiatives that have already made significant strides in the greening of our health system’s business practices. As a result, the EPA has recognized us for our green initiatives.
System-Wide Recycling Initiative
In 2010, North Shore-LIJ implemented a system-wide Solid Waste Recycling and Waste Wise Program. This initiative focuses on recycling paper, newspapers, junk mail, cardboard, aluminum goods and plastic products. During the first three months alone, the program collected more than 330 tons of materials! With us you’ll be invited to come up with new and innovative suggestions to expand the implementation of this worthy program.
Organizational Response to Disasters
As an employer with a diverse workforce including many ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds from all over the world, North Shore-LIJ and its team members respond when disaster strikes. When an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan’s Northeast region, the health system swiftly responded with financial aid to various charities and similarly, when the earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, we immediately donated relief funds and set up a website for employee and community donations for Haitian relief efforts. In just one week, the site received more than $25,000 from employees and community members. We also shipped supplies and medicine to Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic to assist in the recovery efforts.
Women’s Health Awareness
Promoting women’s health is a large-scale internal effort that garners great participation from our team members and their families. We recently set up the annual Every Woman Matters Walk, in which team members and the community participated in fundraising efforts to benefit our new Katz Women’s Hospital. The 2010 event was the largest of its kind in our organization’s history, attracting more than 4,000 walkers who collectively raised more than $500,000 towards women’s health.
